New Year's Eve - 5K time trial
I ran 2 miles up to the Fairview track. I got there and noticed it was too icy to run what I had wanted, a 10K trial. So I headed back to my apartment complex treadmill to try my hand (or rather my foot) at a 5K time trial. As I ran I thought about how much I love the repetitive work of running and how I really embraced it this year. This year I ran more consistently and harder than any of my...
Race Report - Eagle Vail Snowshoe race #fb
Today I got up with Renee and drove to Eagle for the second in Pedal Power’s bike shop sponsored snowshoe races, the Eagle Vail Pazzo’s Pizza 10K. I haven’t run in 4 days and I have been holed up in my apartment working on a programming project. I wanted to use the race to spend some quality time with Renee before she leaves for a week, to try my hand (well my foot) at snowshoe...
Friday - 8 miles
Today I ran down to the Alpine Training Center from my house about 3 or 4 miles, did a workout and ran back. Just plain and simple good work. The Alpine Training Center btw is looking really great as the gym is all organized with new equipment and posters on the wall and in general a really inspiring home for my fitness. At the ATC today we concentrated on our 1 rep deadlift max, which for me...
Thurs-12 miles
Today I did a big loop running in a more actively relaxed style than I usually do. I took off from my house on my normal flat 10 mile route, which means south on Broadway to the South Boulder Creek trailhead and then east until I hit 5 miles on my Garmin and then turning around to come back. Today as I was running I looked over and though of Chautauqua and decided to run up Baseline from the...
Wed-No running
I can’t say rest day anymore because I keep skipping days and the excuse can’t be the need for rest. I have lost my run ever day habit and I don’t like it. But as a good friend said: “it’s ok to be on a detour as long as you know are one.” I know I am on one and there are no real excuses, not the cold or snow or time of year. Days I don’t run are...
Tuesday-8.5miles
Today I woke up in Winter Park and headed out for a cold run. My plan was to find the famous Rollins Pass road and head up it for a bit and this is what I did. What a treat. The run out of Winter Park along the road was cold but easy and soon enough I saw the road leading up.
It was covered in a good 8 inches or more of powder. I didn’t bring my snowshoes so I had to plow ahead in the...
Winter Park
Today, I drove up to Winter Park around noon. I have had an intuition that this place could be my summer Estes Park, in other words an overnight hangout spot for me during the days I can get away during the week. Here are the things I need in such a place:
Beautiful surrounding wilderness to train and play in. Estes Park-check, Winter Park check.
Good coffee shop or 2 with solid wifi....
Sunday-12 miles-Boulder Canyon
Today I went on a long run up Boulder Canyon. I wanted to run about 90 minutes for a long run. This run is pretty easy in terms of little elevation gain. I feel like a bit of a wuss using it as a long run but I just like running by the river so much I can’t resist it. My legs felt really good and I averaged a 7:44 pace which included some really snowy running so not bad.
Saturday-No running-Ski day
Today I took Renee and Sam to go ski at Copper. We skied all day, lots of fun!
Friday-8.5 miles-Fairview track
I took my ass to the track today and ran on the snow that covered most of it. I had 2 kickin soundtracks and a plan to run a progression run. I brought my HR monitor and started out at 125 and ran one mile at each 5bps finishing at 165bps and about a 6:40 pace, pretty good on that snow. As normal for progression runs it felt great and ended up being about 8.5 miles.
Wed-7miles-treadmill
Today I did a really solid treadmill workout at around 4pm while Renee did her homework and watched. I warmed up for a couple of miles and then did 4 mile repeats: 6:40, 6:30, 6:20, 6:15. The treadmill keeps you really honest and is a great to run these sort of quality efforts, I definitely need to do it more.
And then a very exciting development for my fitness in the evening. I signed up for...
Thurs-Snowshoe on Berthoud
Today I headed out to Winter Park for my first skiing there. I stopped at Berthoud Pass to get about an hour of snowshoe climbing in. I parked at the top in the parking lot and headed up the west side of the pass and started climbing very slowly. I really get worn out quickly in my snowshoes. I climbed for about 40 minutes, cresting on top of one of the peaks around there, not sure which one...
Tuesday-rest day
Nothing today, it was too cold and I was too busy with several work projects.
Monday-7 miles-South Boulder Creek
Today I ran very slow and easy on the South Boulder Creek Trail. I ran on snow but I felt strong. I have decided that it is very important that I get 2 or 3 high quality running days in per week and this means taking my slow days seriously so I can kick it hard on the difficult days.
I also did a killer Alpine Training Center in the morning. I felt damn strong as hell! Here was the workout:

Sunday-7 miles treadmill
Today was damn cold. I went to 24 hour fitness and banged out some hill intervals on the treadmill. I warmed up for 12 minutes and then did 18 minutes flat at 7;15 with a 3% grade. Not a big deal, but a good workout. I also got to shoot some hoops!
Sat-Tennessee Pass Kick-Off Classic 5 miler...
This morning I went up for a much anticipated day of winter sports in the mountains. I drove up with my girlfriend Sasha and her son to Copper mountain and dropped them off to ski. I headed up to the Tennessee Pass Nordic Center at Ski Cooper to run in the first of the Pedal Power snowshoe series races, a 5 miler.
I didn’t run much this week so I had fresh legs going in. I wanted to run...
Wed-Rest Day
I didn’t run today. It is odd for me these days not to run but I had really sore legs and a very busy day. Plus I had a killer ATC workout this evening. We did 10 minutes of sandbag getups as the centerpiece of the workout and we competed for number of reps. I was able to knock out 90 reps with a 65lb bag. There were guys with lots heavier bags who did less and some with lighter bags...
